Poetic Review: Reggie Yates - Life & Death in Chicago

Poetic Review: Reggie Yates - Life & Death in Chicago

A poetic summary of Reggie Yates' new BBC Documentary which investigates the reality behind the figures of Chicago's rising gun crime.

We walk down Chicago’s
South Side Streets. We
Plead and bleed as a
brotherhood, as fathers of
Dead children. Fathers of
Unfulfilled dreams.

Stop The Violence.
STOP THE VIOLENCE.

Sirens blare, reporters chase
Five-minute murder scenes
packed up after shot down.
Death is everywhere, both
Sides, no sides – hide but
Bullets coming knocking.

Put The Guns Down.
PUT THE GUNS DOWN.

We are harassed by one another.
We are angry, we are grieving.
She dresses the body, covering
Holes embedded in his skin,
the body that carried promise.
Be a Man. But when we are
Hopeless in the grey area
We are all scared, we are all
Scared.

Save our Youth.
SAVE OUR YOUTH.

We stand in white before
one another, before police and
Mothers, before sons and state.
The system is broke. We are
Breaking every day.

STOP THE VIOLENCE.
This is our war zone.

PUT THE GUNS DOWN.
Fuck the profiteers.

SAVE OUR YOUTH.
The American Dream is Survival.
