Sister Sounds Selection: Chynna
WHAT: Hip-hop with an ambient twist
LYRICTRY: You know I'm all on my busy shit / Bought up the DKNY on my illy shit
INFLU’S: Part of the A$AP crew, but going her own way
WHY: If Biggie rapped about selfies and Mean Girls
Rasping vocals over thudding beats, Philadelphia’s Chynna has got dark rhymes that never drop the flow. Brimming with word play, her craft is obvious. And she makes those trap sounds her own, fitting her vocals in like the missing piece of the puzzle. Chynna has been working with Hudson Mohawke and Rustie on her debut album. And after track ‘MadeInChynna’ made such waves, a HudMo collaboration is definitely something to get excited about. Although mentorship comes courtesy of the A$AP Mob, Chynna isn’t just their ‘first lady’ – instead she can hold her own, giving past tracks a heavy dosage of tongue-in-cheek pop culture references and a penchant for Mean Girls (a track dedicated to Regina George, and a mix-tape named after Glen Coco).
