Spotlight On: The Wonderful Home Making of Lilian Martinez
We're loving Lilian Martinez brand, BFGF, which we've been following on Instagram for a while now. The LA-based designer creates homeware, filled equally with Lisa Simpson and Matisse-cutout-esque feminine figures. She eschews the gallery for throws, tapestry, pillow covers and blankets. The gap between art and life is shortened, although we think we'd feel a little sad about drying ourselves with Martinez's beautiful towels!. Similar to the arts and crafts movement, Martinez brings high art home and asks why can't the Venus di Milo and Drake co-exist? Why are we still so adamant about creating gaps between culture? By taking genres such as home decoration, craft, ceramics, Martinez subverts these 'female arts' and creates a hyper-cool reality that speaks to pop culture and fine art in equal measure.
