WHY Her rhymes are poetry, her beats bring power;
a trailblazing woman whose words are a critical enquiry into the urban social condition.
This month Naru took the crowd at Shambala Festival on a journey. Her lyrics ran to and over the beat. She brought her unique hip hop sound - humour, style and eloquence wrapped in tight phrases and turns of expression. She left no moment without thought and purpose whilst killing it.
What was refreshing, was Naru was there for the love of music and the need for the message. One moment where she stepped aside and brought forward the DIGFLO saxophonist so we all could feel his sound, his story epitomises that Naru isn't this mainstream hip hop female artist that's there to be seen. She was there to hear and to be heard.
"Well, there’s a time for political movement going on right on because people are waking up. A call has already been made. I’m just a part of one of the people who try to find to answer that call in my way." - Akua Naru
We love Akua Naru as we feel an affinity in her purpose to bring forward her stories, experiences and creative flow to raise political consciousness. Ringing true to Naru, her set ended with an unapologetic call to remember, that this is what we experienced is not a trend, but is about Black Power. No matter who you are, "if you believe in justice put your fist in the air and make some noise.'
